1968 - Apollo 7, the first manned Apollo mission, was launched with astronauts Wally Schirra, Donn Fulton Eisele and R. Walter Cunningham aboard.
1975 - The NBC sketch comedy/variety show Saturday Night Live debuts with George Carlin as the host and Janis Ian and Billy Preston as musical guests.

Another important date in music.
1909: The great piano player , Art Tatum , is born in Toledo, Ohio.He was the master of the sophisticated sound on the piano.
1926: The great jazz bassist, Ray Brown , is born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia. His works show how an empasis on perfect timing and the "hard swing" sound can lead to musical beauty.
1927: The great jazz saxophonist , Lee Konitz, is born in Chicago,illinois . He helped develop the "cool jazz" style and sound.
1934: The great international star, Nana Mouskouri, is born. On an international basis, she is one of the top selling-singers in the world. She was born Ionna Mouskouri in Crete She was raised in Athens and was studying at a conservatory there when it was discovered that she was singing with jazz groups at night. She was summarily kicked out of the school.

1962 - Cuban Missile Crisis begins: A U-2 flight over Cuba takes photos of Soviet nuclear weapons being installed.

1777: At the Battle of Saratoga, colonial trops beat the British. This showed several European countries that the American colonies had a chance of victory over the British. Without this victory there would have been no support from Europe for the colonials. There would have been no USA and, therefore, no PLayboy magazine!l
1781: General Cornwallis surrenders to Washington at Yorktpwn all but ending the American Revolutionary War
1888: Thomas Edison files for a patent for his "Optical Phonograph"- the precursor to movies.
1942:"Singer" Gary Puckett is born. Without him who would we laugh at?
Today is "The International Day to Eradicate Poverty." Perhaps they have not read the appers.

1879 - Using a filament of carbonized thread, Thomas Edison tests the first practical electric incandescent light bulb (it lasted 13½ hours before burning out).
1967 - Vietnam War: More than 100,000 war protesters gather in Washington, DC. A peaceful rally at the Lincoln Memorial is followed by a march to The Pentagon and clashes with soldiers and United States Marshals protecting the facility (event lasts until October 23; 683 people were arrested). Similar demonstrations occurred simultaneously in Japan and Western Europe.
