Time may not have destroyed the pyramids, but it definitely changed their look. Several thousand years ago the Egyptian pyramids were actually much different from what we see now; they were covered by paper white stone as smooth as glass. At their top they had golden capstones that gleamed in the bright desert sun. Around AD 500, the Arab invaders stripped the pyramid of the smooth limestone and used it for the building of mosques and palaces in Cairo.
