Where did this widely-used slang word for a police officer come from? One theory is that COP is an abbreviation of COnstable on Patrol, a term used in England. Others say it comes from copper, which the police badges used to be made of. The third theory is that the term originates from the 18th century slang verb "cop" meaning "to get a hold of, catch, capture".
